Poland vs Netherlands LIVE!
Substitute Wout Weghorst snatched an 83rd-minute winner as the Netherlands fought their way back to beat Poland 2-1 in the Group D opener at Euro 2024 on Sunday, leaving it late to win a contest they dominated.
Weghorst had barely been on the field when he finished an expert pass from Nathan Ake to secure a deserved three points.
Poland shocked with a 16th-minute opener from striker Adam Buksa, brought into the team to replace injured talisman Robert Lewandowski. He rose expertly to head home stand-in captain Piotr Zielinski’s corner.
A deserved Dutch equaliser at the Volksparkstadion came 13 minutes later as Cody Gakpo‘s shot took a deflection off Bartosz Salamon.

Wout Weghorst fired Netherlands to a nervy comeback win over Poland to open their Euro 2024 campaign.
An entertaining affair in Hamburg saw Adam Buksa head the Poles ahead before Cody Gakpo’s deflected leveller later in the first half.
As a disappointing draw loomed for the Oranje, Burnley striker Weghorst emerged off the bench to strike in the final ten minutes.
Recap the action with our match report!
This was just the first of three games this Sunday and England face Serbia later…
But next up is the Group C opener in Stuttgart as Slovenia face Denmark.
Follow all the action LIVE!
“It was a tough match, tough opponent, well organised.
“They scored first so it was a little bit more difficult but we created good chances – but we have to be more clinical.
“Overall we performed pretty well and they performed pretty well too. Tough match but at the end we won.”
Austria and France kick off their campaigns at 8pm tomorrow in Dusseldorf.
We then have the second round of games on Friday, starting with Poland vs Austria at 5pm in Berlin before a mouthwatering match-up between Netherlands and France at 8pm in Leipzig.
Wout Weghorst’s goal has certainly taken the pressure off the Dutch ahead of that game…
Just 138 seconds after he came off the bench!
The rain is pouring on Hamburg now and Nicola Zalewski takes aim with a hit which Bart Verbruggen scrambles to save…
And that’s the final whistle!
Netherlands win!
Not a bad hit from range by Jakub Moder but the keeper falls on it easily enough.
We’re into five added minutes and Virgil van Dijk wins a foul deep into Dutch territory.
CHANCE!
Bart Verbruggen gets down low to deny Karol Swiderski after a good run into the box.
It was Jakub Piotrowski with the cross and he hits the side netting with the rebound.
Jeremie Frimpong fails to win a foul with a blatant flop up the pitch but it’s still Netherlands coming forward.
That is a foul on Wout Weghorst down the right flank though and Poland are forced to defend a set play.
