The United Kingdom chapter of the Labour Party has thrown its weight behind Olumide Akpata, the party’s candidate in the September 21 governorship election.
The chairman of the UK LP and a former governorship aspirant, Egbe Omorodion, stated this in a virtual meeting on Sunday.
He stated that Akpata is suitable for the job, while emphasising his record as the former president of the Nigeria Bar Association, while questioning the credentials of other candidates in the race.
He said, “As a former contestant, I am giving my full backing to Akpata and as the chairman of the LP in the United Kingdom, our members will also support our candidate in whatever we deem fit.
“I also remain optimistic about my party’s readiness for the election and the party will deplore party agents to all polling units to counter any attempts at rigging by other parties.
“The LP will not allow any compromise in the collation and announcement of authentic results.”
Omorodion stated that the worst is over for the LP in the state, noting that the caretaker committee put up by the party’s national president, Julius Abure, would not stand.
He said, “The caretaker committee appointed by Abure for Edo LP cannot stand. He is embattled at the national level and he should take care instead of meddling in the affairs of the party in Edo.
“As a former contestant, I will call on all LP members to close rank and support Akpata while Edo people will also do well by supporting the LP candidate.”
Akpata, who briefly participated in the virtual meeting due to the campaign schedule, expressed his gratitude for the support and emphasised the collective effort required for the project.
