England vs Slovakia LIVE!
England just about made it through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after a remarkable comeback to thwart heartbroken Slovakia 2-1 in Gelsenkirchen. Jude Bellingham netted a sublime last-gasp bicycle kick to force extra time against the odds after another massively disappointing Three Lions display that looked to be sending the pre-tournament favourites crashing to an embarrassing last-16 exit that had echoes of their humiliation by Iceland at Euro 2016.
The end appeared likely nigh for Gareth Southgate’s eight-year reign at the helm before that piece of brilliance from Real Madrid superstar Bellingham that cancelled out Ivan Schranz’s first-half goal, with England then completing the most dramatic turnaround early in extra time thanks to a back-post header from captain Harry Kane. Slovakia applied a lot of pressure after that in a bid to save their dreams of a first quarter-final berth, but could not find a crucial equaliser of their own as England just held on.
Switzerland now await for Southgate’s men in the last eight in Dusseldorf next Saturday night after they stunned defending champions Italy 2-0 in Berlin. Follow England vs Slovakia reaction live below, with expert analysis from Standard Sport reporters Dan Kilpatrick and Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke.
England vs Slovakia highlights
Live updates
Slovakia boss Francesco Calzona explains his angry bust-up with Declan Rice after the full-time whistle in Gelsenkirchen…
“Rice was supposed to go to the referees and say goodbye and then leave,” he said.
“I had to speak to the referees and he was carrying on, continuing to speak. Then he apologised and it all ended there.”
Jude Bellingham explains his controversial gesture after that last-gasp wonder goal that saved England…
Jordan Pickford 5
Is always annoyed about something, but had particular right to be here. Effectively a fan on the pitch for much of the game, tearing his hair out at the lack of movement ahead.
Kyle Walker 3
All at sea against Haraslín in the first-half and so loose in possession, too. Should really have been dragged at the break. A shocker for 90 minutes, but long-throw caused havoc for the leveller. Recovered composure in extra-time with some important bits of defending.
John Stones 4
Lack of communication with Guehi in the air led to Slovakia opener. Did as much arm-waving as anyone at lack of options. Dozing when Bellingham took quick free-kick, almost gifting Slovakia a second.
Marc Guéhi 5
Thankless task after being booked so early. Made a key block to bail out Walker but then went for same ball as Stones in build-up to opener and didn’t track his runner. Great desire to win flick-on for Bellingham’s leveller, though.
Kieran Trippier 2
Hospital pass put Guehi in trouble and earned him a booking inside five minutes. Almost cleared the stand with one good opening and prompted boos when cutting back for the umpteenth time in the tournament. Limped off in the second-half.
Declan Rice 4
Game passed him by in the first-half, in both directions. Outshone by junior midfield partner until coming so close to equaliser when strike from distance hit the post. Stamina came in to its own in extra-time.
Shaw misses another England training session ahead of final group game.

Here’s the full reaction from relieved England boss Gareth Southgate to ITV, including a surprise reaction to being sent on late in second-half stoppage time by Ivan Toney, who ended up playing an important role off the bench.
And here’s the man of the match himself, reacting to the latest huge moment of his absolutely remarkable young career…
Speaking to ITV after the full-time whistle, Harry Kane calls Jude Bellingham’s remarkable last-gasp bicycle kick to force extra time one of the best goals in England’s history…
Looked like Calzona was trying to complain about something to the referee there before Rice intervened and took exception to the Slovakia boss pushing him away.
It’s quickly defused, but a sour note to end on.
Full-time
Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane rescue England in the most dramatic comeback to seal a quarter-final date with Switzerland in Dusseldorf next Saturday night.
Absolute heartbreak for Slovakia.
A row between Slovakia manager Francesco Calzona and Declan Rice breaks out after the full-time whistle…
122 mins: Pickford appears to be laughing his head off in late relief as he dives on the ball to snuff out any last-gasp threat from Slovakia.
121 mins: Almost a last-gasp third goal to put this to bed for England after Palmer leads an incisive break and Toney lashes wide.
Should they have just gone to the corner there?!
