England
Gareth Southgate on the squad changing over the last two years: "Things change for week to week during the season and month to month and of course with a lot of changes going back all the way to Qatar, it's impossible to say what's the squad you want.
"The squad we wanted is the one we picked because we think it's the best squad that's equipped in this moment in time and you are trying to balance experience with 11 players who have been to three tournaments or more with younger player's who are playing so well we can't ignore what they're doing."
On the players who missed out on selection: "They have been incredibly professional. They will always be there for the team."

Gareth Southgate was asked whether he knows his starting eleven for the first game against Serbia on June 16:
"Whenever you write a team-sheet at the beginning of the week it's very rare that you get to the end of the week and something hasn't happened. We are pretty clear on where we are heading but you always have to be adaptable because circumstances change."

More from Southgate on Jarrod Branthwaite who misses out on the final squad: "I think it's a bit early for Jarrod, he has had a fantastic season and it was good to get him involved and of course in an ideal world you would want a left footer but picking him ahead of the others, for him I don't think that would have been the right call at this stage. And at left back, I think that's why we have taken a risk with Luke, and I think that it's a risk worth taking."

Gareth Southgate on who could replace Harry Maguire in the starting XI: "In terms of those coming in there is Lewis Dunk and Marc Guehi. There is also Ezri Konsa who has had an excellent season at Aston Villa.
"He has played him at full-back for some of the recent games but he also played at centre-half for us in March and was outstanding. Joe Gomez can also play in a number of positions."

Declan Rice on 20-year-old midfielder Adam Wharton: "I think there's a difference, you can see in players who are top level players at 20 and players that are on the cusp of stuff.
"And he's top level. He sees a pass early, left and right foot. It's impressive the way he passes a ball. Whether it's five or ten yards, there's just a crispness to it. Really impressive. Calm, composed, relaxed.
"You speak to the Crystal Palace boys about him, he's shocked them on how well he's done.
"But he's 20-years-old, it's his first tournament. It's so important we don’t put too much pressure on him. Let him flourish and England are going to have an amazing midfielder to come through for the next 10 to 15 years."

Gareth Southgate on England's striking options: "We've scored more goals than any other generation apart for Walter Winterbottom's, so we have been attacking.
"The different profile of striker is the reason for three, they all offer something different ."
England
Declan Rice on losing 'best mates' James Maddison and Jack Grealish from the squad: "It's been really tough. Madders [Maddison] and Jack [Grealish] are two of my best mates in the squad, probably spent most of my time with them since I've been here.
"To see them go is not a nice feeling. And they've both just said then, before they went, Madders last night, Jack just now, that they wish us all the best.
"They're gutted they've been left out of the squad. We're so close as a group and no one is feeling really bitter about being left out."

England
England midfielder Declan Rice on young midfield options: "I think we saw in the last gamp against Brazil and Belgium what Kobbie [Mainoo] can do and obviously all season in what he has done at Manchester United.
"He fully deserves his place in the squad. Adam [Wharton] played the first half of his season in the Championship and to come to Crystal Palace, he has been outstanding.
"In training he has been impressing a lot of the players, he's so calm on the ball and he has a beautiful left foot."

Gareth Southgate on chances at Euro 2024: "We're excited about what we have. Obviously we are going into a tournament with the unknow to what will play out.
"But we have a lot of experience in the group in tournaments but also big matches at club level. All of that adds into the mix of us being a really good team."
Southgate on England's main leaders: "Leadership is an very important part of any successful team. We still have a lot of players with 50 or more caps, Jordan Pickford, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Declan Rice and Harry Kane.
"Kieran Tripper is very close too that figure. We have young leaders as well, so we've always been blessed that we have leaders in the group."

Gareth Southgate on injury doubts in the squad: "Luke [Shaw] is still in rehab. Lewis Dunk won't be available for tomorrow, but will train from the beginning of next week. Everybody else is available for tomorrow.
"Harry [Kane] could play 90. I'm not sure he will. No other concerns at the moment."

Gareth Southgate on England's young attacking talent: "I'm excited! The other night we had a lot of experienced attacking players not starting and we still had a lot of goals in the team.
"We were still able to bring people off from the bench to score goals, which in my head, in the attacking sense is really crucial."

Gareth Southgate on Luke Shaw's fitness: "He's progressed really well in the last couple of weeks.
"At the moment we think he could have some involvement in the second group game, but you have to keep hitting the markers.
"But he's had a good volume of work, operating at good speeds, so yeah, I think you can take one gamble and that's a gamble, we've got enough evidence to believe it can pay off.
"And positionally, with what he brings with his experience, the fact that he's a left-footer who can drive forward that's a situation we wanted to explore."

England
Gareth Southgate on leaving out Harry Maguire: "Trent can play play in defence and I think we have nine defenders.
"It was part of the reason why we couldn't take Maguire, because that means we would have had to take a tenth and then the balance wouldn't have been right.
"Harry has made some progress but it's been complicated, we definitely wouldn't have had him for the group stages."

Gareth Southgate says that Jarell Quansah will be part of the England squad to face Iceland at Wembley on Friday, despite not making the 26-man squad.
If selected Quansah would win his first England cap.

England
Gareth Southgate on the absence of Jack Grealish and James Maddison:" All the players took the news really respectfully. Of course, all players will think they should be in and that's why they are top players.
"They have that self-belief and mindset, but the fact is we have some players who have been playing extremely well in the league all season.
"We just felt other players had stronger seasons particularly in the last six months or so."
