We just couldn't get the goal we needed. Poland didn't have a shot on target in 120 minutes. As a neutral I love penalties, I love the theatre, I love the excitement but last night it was horrendous.
I feel for Dan James, the pressure on him. People say why didn't you have your best penalty taker go in last, the reason is you might not get to that point. It might be all over by then, I understand why the best go first and that is why Lewandowski went first for Poland.

Question marks over Rob Page's future came close to being turned into statements after those summer defeats.
And while it's not unusual for managers to feel the heat after poor results, to have it turned up in public by your own chief executive was – at best – unnecessarily disruptive. More tension than together stronger.
While Noel Mooney would describe reports of Roy Keane being lined up to replace Page as "baloney", it was accepted that the FAW had looked at Page's future – while an interview on matchweek made no denial of Page's need to win games.
It saw Page's backroom staff attend a news conference in a show of support, and Ben Davies tell the world such "noise" wasn't helpful.
As it turned out, Wales were galvanised and delivered a superb performance to beat Croatia – with players performing 'zip it' celebrations.
Nevertheless, even after peace talks between Page and Mooney, the public split between hierarchy and team still had a damaging impact.

I think he deserves to take us into the Nations League and I know a lot of Welsh fans will disagree with this. I think he lost a lot of faith from Welsh fans after what happened in the World Cup but there were reasons beyond his control for that. I know it was his decision who played in those three games but it would be a brave man to leave Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey [out or on the bench] who were nowhere near match fit to go into that competition.
But when you look at what he has done, he got us out of a sticky group at the last Euros. This is what we mean by fine lines, if we won last night Pagey would have created history as the first Welshman to take us to back-to-back tournaments.

Turkey is a proud footballing nation and, with its national side back on the rise, an away game there was always likely to prove challenging.
Wales had made things infinitely more difficult for themselves by coming into that game last June off the back of that humiliating defeat at home by Armenia.
They were nowhere near that bad in Turkey but, even then, Page's side were straining to keep their opponents at bay during the first half in Samsun.
Wales rode their luck at times, with Turkey having an early goal disallowed, but then in the 41st minute Joe Morrell was sent off for a reckless challenge on Ferdi Kadioglu.
If Wales were already up against it, that red card rather sealed their fate. Although they battled gamely, Wales succumbed to a 2-0 defeat and their hopes of qualifying automatically were dealt a massive blow.

We missed out on qualifying from our group because we took one point from six against Armenia. Got a second chance in the play-offs despite finishing BOTTOM of our Nations League group. Drawn at home in both play-off games, even got to take penalties in front of the Canton! Everything went for us yet we still didn’t qualify because Page came up short tactically just as he did in Qatar. We played five at the back and spent 120 minutes hoofing it up to Kieffer Moore who was isolated throughout. The whole setup nullified the talents of Johnson and Wilson and later Brooks and James. Dan James was wasted at full-back, I don’t understand why Broadhead was brought on, I don’t understand why Ramsey was in the squad!

We have got a shocking record against Poland, last night was the seventh consecutive defeat against them. we have only ever beaten them once, coincidentally that was be 51 year ago tomorrow. They have got the hoodoo on us but I did fancy us last night.
We were at home, we couldn't have asked for more. We had a [good] record in qualification down at the Cardiff City stadium. Poland haven't been great away from home in their group. It's small margins, fine lines. Had Ben Davies tucked that left arm in when he pounced on the Moore header in the first half, we don't know what would have happened.

Re. Rob Page, other than a very good result against Croatia, it was an otherwise mediocre to poor qualifying campaign. If you can't beat Armenia home or away (the home one being an embarrassing drubbing), then you don't deserve to qualify for a tournament. I think the decision to replace Page should've been made in November. Steve Cooper for me if he'll take it, if not.

There is rarely one moment alone that leads to disappointment – yet there is one night that glaringly and grotesquely sticks out in Wales' failed campaign, long before Daniel James' penalty miss.
Wales' 4-2 defeat by Armenia was not only a shock in terms of result, it was shocking in its manner, and the type of night Welsh football thought it had left behind.
This was Moldova, Georgia et al for the millennials, a home humiliation from which Wales' automatic qualification hopes never truly recovered.
Wales were unquestionably poor in their defending, but an imbalanced team selection provided too much of an invite for Armenia – and prompted significant levels of pressure on Page.

These friendlies did have value for Southgate despite poor results – Dunk’s performances may leave the door open for Dier to return to the squad, he’s played very well since arriving at Bayern and knows the England system. Maguire will start along side Stones though whether we like it or not and tbh I’m no clearer on who would step in if either were injured – Konsa and Gomez probably top the list but both would be a weak link against the best sides. At LB, if Shaw doesn’t play games for United before the summer he can’t go and then we’re looking at Chilwell starting which I’m fine with – he was much improved against Belgium compared with the Brazil game. What has become a lot clearer is the third midfield spot – it must be Mainoo or TAA and Southgate should use the two warm ups and the relatively weak group stage opposition to decide who he wants in the biggest games. In all other positions the team essentially picks itself.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney is back in the England fold after serving an eight-month suspension for breaching FA betting rules.
Toney's first England cap came almost exactly a year ago on 26 March 2023 when he came off the bench in a 2-0 win against Ukraine.
He earned his first start last night and scored from the penalty spot, boosting his hopes of making Gareth Southgate's 23-man squad for Euro 2024.
Speaking about his time away from the national set-up, Toney said: "It was always going to be hard to watch knowing I should have been there.
"But that's done and dusted now. I can't change it. There's no point dwelling on something I can't change because it'll just hurt me even more.
"But hopefully I can make the Euros squad and put things right. I try to be confident, but let's see what happens."

One of the reasons Phil Foden is a success now is because Pep Guardiola knew to use him sparingly as he develops while people were crying out for him to be used in every game. Something to bear in mind while discussing Mainoo as he hits the big time
Matt, Birmingham
Matt Upson: I'm going with John Stones and Harry Maguire in the centre of defence because they have a good understanding together and great experience and also I don't think anyone is challenging them enough. It is a bit trickier for who plays alongside Declan Rice but I like the look of Kobbie Mainoo, a great addition to the squad. He has the energy and character and I think he has the mentality to deal with that level.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has been ruled out for the rest of the season and is set to miss Euro 2024 this summer after having elbow surgery.
The 31-year-old was sent to see a specialist after withdrawing from the England squad on Sunday.
Johnstone has made four appearances for England.

Our defence is a real concern. Maguire, Dunk and Chilwell are not up to the job. Injured players need to get fit quickly please! If the Manager can unleash Foden that would help further up the field. Bellingham – what can one say about him – he is an incredible player and we are very lucky to have him. Lastly – Toney played well and probably shades Watkins right now.
Chris, Reigate
Chris Sutton: Gareth Southgate will pick Harry Maguire if he's fit but I have been really impressed by Joe Gomez this season, wherever he has played in Liverpool's defence, and I want to pick him. Bukayo Saka is on the right flank in my team but Phil Foden has to be in there somewhere – I've put him on the left – and the big decision was who gets the extra midfield spot. I want to be attack-minded but I'm not putting Trent Alexander-Arnold in there, I'm going with James Maddison.

Southgate won’t pick this starting XI for the EUROS, but this XI is a real people pleaser; Goalkeeper: Pickford. Defenders: Walker, Branthwaite, Stones, Trippier (Shaw won’t be ready in time). Midfielders: Mainoo, Rice, Saka, Bellingham, Foden. Forward: Kane. TAA deserves a spot in the starting XI, but who do you remove?
Tom
Guillem Balague: England go into the the Euros with probably the strongest squad in Europe at the moment. Most of the squad picks itself. Maguire will start because Southgate likes him very much and he is probably the best option he has in the centre of defence along with Stones at the moment. The only problems are the last midfield place and just who to play at left-back. I would play Maddison behind Harry Kane and I'd have Kieran Trippier (if fit) at left-back replacing him with Gomez if he isn't (that is if Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell are not ready either).

The next squad England boss Gareth Southgate will be picking is his selection for Germany, so who makes his starting XI for the Three Lions' opener against Serbia on 16 June?
There are no more friendlies left but, with the domestic season entering its finale, there are plenty of players still with points to prove.
We asked former England and Blackburn striker Chris Sutton, ex-Man City midfielder Michael Brown, ex-Arsenal defender Matt Upson, BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty and BBC Sport columnist and Spanish football expert Guillem Balague who they would pick for the big kick off.
See who the pundits have selected and pick your starting XI here.
