Government responsible for poor health of Nigerians, rating of health sector, says NUAP – Guardian Nigeria

South East Coordinator of Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAP), Charles Nwoye, has blamed the Federal Government for worsening health condition of Nigerians and poor rating of the health sector globally, lamenting that people are suffering greatly.
Nwoye made this known while addressing journalists, at the weekend, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra State. Speaking barely one week into the ongoing strike action by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), Nwoye insisted that a responsible and responsive government would have proactively stopped the action by listening to the union.
He further expressed concern that over the years various administrations have refused to take professional advice to ensure the health system is running well.
He recalled that his union started negotiating for adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) meant for health workers and health professionals in 2014, and in that same year, Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMHESS) was created for dental and medical practitioners, which, he said, had left CONHESS stagnant.
He said they refused the same adjustment for JOHESU, noting that at the point of implementation of these two salary structures, it was agreed that whenever any of them is adjusted, the other should be adjusted too. He also recalled that in 2017, JOHESU concluded negotiation with the Federal Government on implementation of CONHESS.
According to him, JOHESU is presently reviving the strike action they had embarked in 2018 due to government’s inability to do the needful, which the Federal Government deceived them into stopping.
