2022 was an exciting and energetic year for the entertainment industry as Nigerians dominated the global space in music and film. Therefore, it’s only fair to expect and hope for the best in 2023. In this feature, Daily Trust Saturday highlights a few projects fans should expect in the year.
Artistes set to drop albums
Davido
Davido’s album has long been awaited by many fans since 2022. However, following the death of his beloved son, Ifeanyi Adeleke, the artiste took time to stay away from social media and didn’t make a comeback till his World Cup performance. According to reports, Davido is expected to make a comeback in 2023.
Olamide
It’s a wonder the YBNL Chairman, Olamide, didn’t drop an album last year as in the last 10 years. The music label boss had succeeded in dropping an album every single year. Many fans speculate that Olamide might have decided to relax last year and further push the career of his label mates such as Asake, Fireboy and DML. Olamide has stated that his upcoming album, which may potentially be his last for a while, will be released in 2023. Fans eagerly await the release of the megastar’s melancholy album.
Ruger
Ruger is among the list of upcoming artistes who had an amazing 2022 following the release of the deluxe version of his “Second Wave”. The project produced hit singles such as “Girlfriend” and “Dior” that kept topping the charts. Before the end of 2022, he dropped “Asiwaju” which became the No 1 on Apple Music’s Top 100 Naija Songs. The artiste has teased fans with the idea of dropping an album in 2023.

Nigerian Afropop singer and songwriter, Ekeh Chiaka Joseph, better known by his stage name, Majeeed, is a Dream Empire Music artiste. His signature song, “Yawa No Dey End”, which served as the lead single for his extended play, “Bitter Sweet”, was released in 2022. Majeeed is well on his way to becoming a legend. His chances of success in 2023 are greatly increased by his recent cooperation with Empire Distribution, one of Africa’s greatest winners in 2018.

Shanty town
Netflix will start streaming “Shanty Town”, a Chichi Nworah production, on January 20, 2023. Dimeji Ajibola’s series title depicts a gang of courtesans who strive to flee the clutches of an infamous kingpin – but political corruption and blood ties make liberation a near-impossible aim.
Chidi Mokeme, RMD, Ini Edo, Nse Ikpe Etim, Uche Jombo, Shaffy Bello, Sola Sobowale, Zubby Micheal, Toyin Abraham, Nancy Isime, Lilian Afe, Paul Okoye, Regina Daniels, Ali Nuhu, Slimcase, and Mercy Eke are among the famous actors who appear in the series.
Nigerian trade
Jade Osiberu, the director of “Isoken”, has revealed the title of her upcoming movie, “Nigerian Trade”, which she claims is based on actual events. She also revealed that the film, a suspenseful crime drama, was based on a thorough investigation of kidnapping for ransom in Nigeria.
“Nigerian Trade,” written by award-winning screenwriter Yinka Ogun and produced by Foresight Global Films, relates the story of Dike Maduka, nicknamed Eric, an infamous brilliant millionaire kidnapper who eluded capture for two decades, and the high-stakes investigation into his activities conducted by quickly rising police officer and director of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Superintendent Khalid Abubakar.
Hijack 93/The Six
Play network studios also announced it 2023/2024 projects which included one classic remake, a sequel, two biopics and original stories. One of which is Hijack 93 which is based on the hijack of the 1993 Nigerian Airways plane. The studio will also be releasing its first original, named “The Six”, which is said to follow the story of the mysterious, charismatic cult leader, Richard Williams, played by Ramsey Nouah.
